In this dual role within the Research and Development team at Campbell’s Meals and Beverages, the Packaging Engineer - Sustainability plays a key role in advancing enterprise packaging sustainability while supporting core package development initiatives. The position is responsible for the support, development, and communication of enterprise packaging sustainability activities. In addition to sustainability efforts, the Packaging Engineer develops and implements packaging solutions for Campbell’s brands across primary, secondary, and tertiary formats.
What you will do…
Sustainability
Data & Reporting: Support collection, validation, and analysis of packaging sustainability data for Campbell’s Corporate Responsibility Report, customer requests, and external reporting programs (e.g., Walmart Gigaton, THESIS). Partner with IT and Digitalization to enhance data systems and reporting processes.
Coalition & Industry Engagement: Represent Campbell’s in coalitions, conferences, and industry events to stay informed on emerging policies and innovations. Maintain and evaluate memberships, share insights with Packaging R&D leadership, and identify new collaboration opportunities.
Sustainability Programs & Tools: Lead packaging support for the How2Recycle program, including monitoring updates, training team members, and guiding compliance. Manage Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) requests and conduct annual benchmarking to assess industry trends and performance.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Meet regularly with packaging category teams to align on design-for-recyclability principles, public commitments, and policy mandates. Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (including Procurement, Legal, Regulatory, and Corporate Responsibility) to advance enterprise goals and compliance.
Communications & Progress Tracking: Track progress toward sustainability goals and commitments, summarize insights for leadership, and support internal and external communications highlighting Campbell’s packaging sustainability achievements.
Packaging Development
Develops and implements packaging solutions supporting new product launches, continuous quality improvements, and cost savings initiatives.
Provides technical thought leadership for the role of packaging to project teams, demonstrating an understanding of cost drivers, material properties, equipment capabilities, customer requirements, and consumer interaction.
Apply the principles of data management, statistics, and experimental design to determine, execute, and document test plans.
Collaborates with Campbell’s internal cross-functional teams, as well as with external vendors and manufacturing facilities.
Troubleshoot issues that arise during assessment, feasibility, development, and commercialization with some manager supervision, implementing and executing the plan of action.
Collaborates to help identify new approaches, processes, and best practices.

This role partners with a wide variety of cross-functional partners, including Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability, Legal, Regulatory, Government Affairs, Marketing, and Supply Chain to advance enterprise goals, ensure compliance with emerging regulations, and develop packaging solutions. Strong communication, organization, and project management skills are essential to manage multiple initiatives effectively. The position reports to the Manager of Packaging- Sustainability.
What you bring to the table…
Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Materials Science, Packaging, or related field.
6+ months of experience in Packaging R&D roles, including Co-op or Internship experience.
It would be great to have…
A strong passion and interest in packaging sustainability
Strong communication and written skills.
Experience with packaging development software desired (TOPS or CAPE), specification database management, and MS Office.
Able to develop a development and implementation plan for low-moderate risk projects using sound technical methodology.
Self-starter with the ability to drive technical solutions forward and multitask on key programs/projects.
Ability to identify and conduct appropriate tests to simulate the distribution environment.
Working Conditions:
- Travel (about 20%) required. This is often associated with visits to manufacturing plants, vendors, and conferences. A significant portion of the job is in a normal office environment.
